Latest Team Japan Update

Just a quick update on recent events and future tournaments I am involved with that take me away from my home at Glenelg GC.

Last week I travelled with Team Japan to Chinese Taipei for the Neighbours Trophy. It is an annual match between japan, Korea and Chinese Taipei. Each country has four women and four men representing over three rounds. The best three scores each day count to the team total.

The golf course was Sunrise Golf and Country Club and was the most exclusive course in Taipei. It was built on the side of the mountain and because of this had extreme slopes and also extreme weather which we experienced on the last day.

The Japanese man and women had a great week with the men dominating from the outset and comfortably winning. The women on the other hand had a much tougher assignment, up against the reigning world champion Korean side who had all three members of the world cup team playing. Our relatively young team (all players were 16 years old) performed magnificently and finally overcame Korea in the last few holes.

It was the first time since 2004 that Japan had won both the Men’s and Women’s sections of the Neighbours Trophy! The big highlight was one of our boys scoring a hole in one, and as is the custom in Taipei, he won 6 bottles of single malt whisky. With this presenting a problem for customs, the coach very graciously accepted a bottle to help out!

My next trip is to China next week for the Queen Sirikit Trophy (Asia Pacific Teams Championship for Women) and I will be joined on the trip by Sarah King who will be travelling as Australian Team manager! Should be a great battle!

Look forward to seeing you all soon!
